sew_hip [ sarah_phillips ] | Dec. 31st, 2009 04:06 pm Plush taxidermy deer This is my first post here but I've been lurking for a while.
I made this for my boyfriend for Christmas. It's made of acrylic & wool felt, wadding, wooden plaque for the back and dollmaking eyes.

advanced_sewing [ cellos_playing ] | Dec. 30th, 2009 06:07 pm specific name for shoulder seams... I can't for the life of me remember what shoulder seams are named when they're cut diagonal toward the back of the garment... I made them when drafting an edwardian blouse for a little night music years ago... can anybody prompt me??
Thanks! 7 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ neurofern ] | Dec. 30th, 2009 10:13 pm Selvedge Needlebook I made this needlebook yesterday for my mum (I won't be seeing her until February so I get a little more time to make her gifts!) from selvedges cut from the ridiculous amount of fabric I own. I love it, the only thing I wish I'd done differently is to have a opaque button instead of a transparent one.
If anyone's interested in making one of their own I posted a full tutorial here on my sewing/craft blog.25 comments - Leave a comment

advanced_sewing [ aylwen ] | Dec. 30th, 2009 12:36 pm Preparing piping - cutting fabric on the bias I need to make 22m of piping and can't find the diagram I used to have showing an easier way to cut out the fabric. Can anyone help me with this, as I'll be cutting some expensive silk on the bias and don't want to waste any. 6 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ deadsilent ] | Dec. 29th, 2009 04:44 pm I'm thinking of making a skirt out of some 4-way stretch, and putting a zipper in it, vertically. I know that if not sewn right, the zipper will bobble and not look good. Any tips for avoiding that? I'm thinking that some kind of stabilizer is needed. 4 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ lolwut ] | Dec. 29th, 2009 11:20 am thread tension help...I think I just got a Brother XL-3750 for Christmas. It's the first sewing machine I've ever owned, and I have seriously no experience with them. Over the last couple of days I've been trying to practice basic straight stitches, and keep running into the same problem. The lower thread ALWAYS becomes a tangled mess on the fabric. I've tried everything I can think of. I've rewound the bobbin at least a bazillion times, I've re-threaded the entire thing, I've changed bobbins several times...and still, nothing is working. I've read the manual over and over again, so I'm certain that I'm winding the bobbin correctly. And I always make sure when loading the bobbin that there isn't any tangled thread in the bobbin case.
So my question to you much more experienced sewers is, is there something I'm missing? Should I just keep trying to correct the tension? Is there some magic trick to this that I just can't get? I've read in reviews that thread tension is pretty common problem with this machine, so I'm tempted to return the thing and get another (Brother XR-7700 is the one I've had my eye on for some time now). Should I just do that? I'm getting really frustrated here, because I've been pining after a sewing machine for months, and now that I finally have one, it doesn't seem to work :( 17 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ kixeldorado ] | Dec. 29th, 2009 11:25 am Cleaning Question So a long time ago, ( my aunt gave me this prom dress.... )
It's in very good shape. There are a few tiny tears at the hem where once upon a time my cat decided that he was going to sit in the closet and chew on hanging things (don't get me started). It hasn't yellowed as much as i thought it has, which is good.
So...how could I freshen this up? It smells a bit musty from being wrapped up in plastic in my closet, and I'd like to maybe see if I could get the color a little brighter (although that really isn't a huge deal if I can't).
I want to avoid bleach, as I think it might turn out rather badly. I'm considering tossing it in the gentle cycle with some vinegar, maybe some baking soda (not sure which).
Do you all think this would work or is there something better for it that I've not heard of? 17 comments - Leave a comment

advanced_sewing [ sparklewolfie ] | Dec. 28th, 2009 06:21 pm Women to Men Hello everybody! I am wondering if anybody has a tutorial to convert a sewing pattern for a woman to a man? Basically I am trying to make a white pleather trench coat for a man, but only have a long coat pattern for a woman. I can alter my pattern into the right style for the trench coat, but I cannot be sure how to alter the bust section for a man? Please help if you can! I have tried Googling everything I can think of, but I have nothing :(
Thank you in advance! 4 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ geobabe ] | Dec. 28th, 2009 04:10 pm adding a lining I've never added a lining to a garment before and could use some pointers.
I want to line a pair of wool pants that I am currently working on. When I'm cutting out the lining, should I make it the exact size and shape of the outer layer (without pockets and other details)? Or do I need to modify it in any way? I know I will want to hem it a tiny bit shorter, and I won't cut a waistband. I am planning on attaching the lining to the waistband facing, and slipstiching it to the back zipper, which the directions say to do for the facing. Does that sound about right?
If it makes a difference, I'm making view A of this pattern. 5 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ cellos_playing ] | Dec. 28th, 2009 12:44 am new sewing machine! I got a new (used) sewing machine for christmas. The problem is, it did not come with the manual. I am trying to find the manual to purchase online, but I don't know what specific machine I have. It says Husqvarna Viking, and then on the gold thing on the bottom right it says "300" and on the top left it says "Embroidery".
I've tried googling endlessly and I'm only finding the model "Scandinavia" that has 300 along with it but it doesn't look like my machine. Halp??!
here is what it looks like: http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs213.snc3/22059_650808063467_20602128_37744317_7717184_n.jpg 10 comments - Leave a comment

sew_hip [ octopussneakers ] | Dec. 26th, 2009 06:54 pm I just recieved a sewing machine after following this community and getting many great ideas of what to do with it. However in playing around with it, I popped the bobbin case out with the bobbin, and now can't get it back in. I've already tried the instruction manual and google, neither of which helped (bad descriptions, or ones that didn't work).
Does anyone know how to insert the bobbin case on a singer 4228?
Edit: I just got it !! (two days and much frustration later) For anyone in the future, there is a black metal plate on the right....the bobbin case rests on TOP of this, don't try to go under it!!
Thanks for the help! 5 comments - Leave a comment

advanced_sewing [ anniejackson ] | Dec. 26th, 2009 11:34 pm Helen Joseph Armstrong book Does anyone here have the Helen Joseph Armstrong book: Patternmaking for Fashion Design ??
If you do have it could you look at page 32 and tell me if there are instructions for how to measure someone to make their bodice? I have this book back in Canada and scanned it (too heavy to move with me) but I missed page 32 and I just want to check if it is important.
Thanks!
edit: RESOLVED, thanks! 8 comments - Leave a comment
